As a child, I often remember walking into what my grandma (Ma, as I called her) called her "doll room." A room filled with dolls of all shapes, sizes and textures. I can remember one day very vividly, I was around 3, maybe 4 years old - It was the first time I had "really seen" the doll room. I had just really started playing with dolls, when my Ma told me she had something to show me. . . I walked in, the room was dark - she turned on the light and I can remember a glow just coming over my face. . . to my little eyes there were thousands of dolls. Some with smiles, some crying - other's laughing, and some were even STILL in there boxes (I remember thinking at the time that my grandma was NUTS leaving these dolls STILL in there packages, I mean how do you PLAY with them that way?) My Ma told me that day that her collection was merely for looking at, to that I could not imagine, I remember asking her, "why don't you play with them Ma?" She answered me with such love, for her dolls and for me! She said "Jenny, when I was a child I only had one dolly, I loved her, and played with her until she had no more eyes and only one leg. She was all I had, when I got older and was able to have more dolls, I started this collection, to remind myself of my childhood and to remember every time I look at these faces, what it was like to be a kid." - And yes, she showed me her childhood doll. I think it was because of Ma's dolls and her love for them, that I loved to play with dolls as a child, and why I took such good care of them, that my children now are able to play with the dolls that I did, all those year's ago! |
